Richard and I had visited Weenen Game Reserve a few years ago as day visitors while we were staying at a bush lodge close by and loved the area at the time.  So when we were deciding on a mid Winter break, we thought it a good idea to revisit the place and spend two nights at  Umkhombe Cottage which is situated in the Reserve and run by the Ezemvelho Parks Board.  Its just one and a half hours from Balgowan so very close and convenient.  I was amazed how the scenery changes from the lush green valleys of the Midlands ( in Summer at any rate!) to the  dry thorn and bush veld vegetation that dominates the view as soon as you pass through Estcourt.  The cottage is beautifully maintained, and although very basic had everything we needed.  We were most impressed with the cleanliness and neatness of everything and it is clear that this reserve is well run.  Not something one can say about most KZN Ezemvelo resorts!  We were treated to a spectacular sunset on our first night which set the tone for a very enjoyable stay.  We were not lucky enough to see Rhino but saw plenty of signs that they were around. Sadly, we  understand that poaching is a huge problem here. For me, the trees , Acacia amongst others, were unique, twisted and convoluted shapes that made for beautiful photography. Amongst the animals we saw were Red Haartebeest, Duiker, Zebra, Warthogs, Giraffe, Ostrich, Eland and Kudu. The Jackals were very active at night and I loved listening to them while tucked up in bed - we hear them often in the Drakensberg as well. I was also thoroughly entertained and enchanted  by the show  the little Blue Waxbills put on as they enjoyed their morning ablutions in the bird bath in front of the cottage. The bushveld has an immense silence all of its own, save the sound of the birds and I was mesmerised by the peacefulness.  Two nights was  just not enough and we returned to 'civilization' with some reluctance!
