Day 3 - Scott Hut to Oakhurst Hut - 7.7 km

Today was another lovely day of beautiful views, steep climbs followed by steep descents, walking through indigenous forests and then our first challenge of the day, crossing the Elandsbos River.  As the water is so brown, it is difficult to gauge how deep it is.  The  crossing to the sandbank  and then on to the other side of the river was fine and we  were able to cross with our backpacks on as the water came to about the top of our legs. I had a bit of a heart stopping moment as I had put my camera down on a piece of driftwood whilst putting on my boots.  The next thing a small wave came rolling in and I scrambled to retrieve the camera - a little water went underneath, but after checking it, no damage was done.  A lucky escape!
The approach to Oakhurst starts with an ascent to the plateau before dropping down to the Lottering River.  We were shocked to see that the fynbos and vegetation  on the plateau had experienced a fire in the previous months and the landscape looked desolate.  It will take some time for this to be restored to its former glory.  We crossed the Lottering without too much trouble and then it was not far to Oakhurst Hut.  I t thought this hut had the most scenic outlook of them all being very close to the rocks and seashore.  The shower here was a lot cleaner and we enjoyed exploring the many rock pools and rock formations in the afternoon.
