I had visited the Mnweni Pools on my very first hike to the Mnweni in 2002 but had heard recently that there are two other spectacular pools on the Mnweni River that are largely unvisited as most hikers bypass them en route to the Mnweni Valley and the passes beyond. Karl Beath and Richard wanted to visit and photograph these relatively unknown pools so we spent three days in this area in June 2018. Accompanied by good hiking friend, Roger, we enjoyed three days of perfect weather, sunny windless days albeit freezing nights in the Mnweni and visited all three pools, Mnweni Pools, Mlambu's Pools and Embezini Pools. The turquoise water was inviting but unfortunately not enough to endure more than a bath time splash at this time of the year. I did however manage to fall into the river at Mlambu's Pools after slipping on a rock while jumping across the river - fortunately no injuries other than my pride and the camera survived as it was in a dry bag!
