I have never understood why Mkhomazi is largely forgotten about and receives few visitors as it is a real hidden gem! Perhaps  because it is situated some distance from the Berg and you are not really immersed in the mountains. We had not been there in some time and decided to do a different route to Mckenzies Cave which involved a walk and several climbs up the ridge that runs up to the plateau. It was a hot day and the going became tough the closer we got to the top, especially as there were no real paths but we were rewarded with sweeping views of the Giants range to the north and south at the summit.  The skies became cloudy and we could see massive storms forming down towards the Bushmans Nek area but the rain only fell later in the afternoon. We came across the most amazing gorge which we had not known existed and the entire area was carpeted with many varieties of wild flowers.  We approached the cave from the north and were captivated by the beautiful rock formations which are a highlight of this area.  There was very little flowing water at the cave and it is worrying that the Berg is still so dry at this time of  the year.  We backtracked a little and found a little pool of  trickling water and set up our tent.  The remainder of the afternoon was spent in walking about and taking photos, before the rain arrived and we retreated to the tent for coffee and biscuits.
Our walk out back to the office the next day was all down hill and took a few hours.  The absolute highlight was seeing a massive herd of Eland, we estimated 150 or so.  The most Eland we have ever seen in the Berg and a wonderful ending to a most enjoyable hike
