This was a hike with a challenge – to do the entire Giants Cup Trail which is approximately 60kms over three days, or 2 and a half to be more exact.  This trail starts at the Sani Pass Road and ends at Bushman’s Nek with overnight stops at various huts en route.  The plan was to do this in reverse, in other words start at Bushman’s Nek and finish at the Sani road.  We planned on walking some 23kms the first day, bypassing Swiman Hut and ending at Winterhoek hut that night. The second day would be another 23kms to Pholela Hut, bypassing Mzimkhulwana Hut with the last day being the shortest, 13kms to the Sani Road.
A group of 8 of us did this and thoroughly enjoyed our experience.  The first day was challenging and long as we had all had a very early start but we all made it to Winterhoek  by 4.00pm, some with sorer feet than others!  A brisk shower in cold water was refreshing and we enjoyed sitting in the bouma with a hot drink watching the beautiful shift of colours in the clouds as the sun set.  Next morning we were up early and on the trail.  Today was the same distance as the day before but somehow it felt a little easier – amazing what a good night’s sleep can do!   We arrived at Pholela hut in good time and the cold beers from the shop went down well. Whilst having breakfast the next morning a curious jackal passed by on his travels, hoping for a snack – lovely to see!  Later we stopped at the Ngwenya Pools with some jumping in the water and one or two jumping out just as swiftly, it was that cold!  Soon we arrived at the Sani road, mission accomplished!

Thanks to Roger for organising a great hike and to everyone for the wonderful company!
