We spent a very relaxed Christmas at Dumbe, which is situated near the top of Oliviershoek Pass, Northern Natal.  Beautiful views  of the Berg and the valley below with peace and quiet in abundance!  At the top of Retief Pass there is a monument of a woman walking barefoot over the Drakensberg known as the Kaalvoet Vrou. After the Voortrekkers entered Natal, which was a British Colony  in 1847, there were a number of trekkers who wanted to return to the Orange Free State.  Susanna Smit, sister of Gert Maritz, one of the Voortrekker leaders, declared that she would rather trek barefoot back over the Berg than live in Natal under British rule.
